Wagashi

“Spring should be viewed from a window, like a painting complimented by a frame,” said the late Chinese writer Qian Zhongshu. Qian’s description and impression could perhaps be aptly understood by taking a bite of a wagashi out of a box.
The residence of this project enjoys magnificent views of changing seasons for being surrounded by green parks that are dispersed throughout the cultural district.  As such, our design concept draws inspiration from Japan’s famous wagagshi artist Mizukami Chikara, whose work of micro landscapes reveals his insightful observations of garden rocks, bamboos and plants. Seasonal changes are compressed into a wooden box to represent the poetic imageries of “spring orchids nestling in the valley, summer lotus swaying in the pond, autumn chrysanthemum sitting amongst aromatic grasses and winter plums adorning the trees.”
Starting from the entrance, natural patterns on the stone materials refer to the fresh greens that have just emerged from the soil as winter gives way to spring. The elegant color in this area elude to the fragrance of orchids in the springtime. The elusive verdant colors hint at the vitality of this season while echoing the trees outside the large window.
Summer sweeps over as one saunters into the master bedroom. Veins on the lotus leaves reflect the golden rays of the brilliant sun. Dazzling gold and spirited green colors seem to welcome the chorus of cicadas in the sweet summer breeze.
The multipurpose room is filled with gentle shades of yellow and auburn that are representative of maple leaves. Ripened grains and brown bark imbue the space with a touch of warmth, as golden chrysanthemums on the wall blossom into the autumn.
Winter atmosphere pervades the guest room, where walls white as snow encircle the space.
Under the wagashi box-like ceiling, sceneries of the four seasons instill a sense of happiness in the residents’ daily life, as if offering a taste of an exquisite piece of wagashi.
