Manifestation of Memories

If memories were stored in our mind as film negatives, this project would be an attempt to develop those negatives and bring memories back to life!

Inspired by four sisters and their reminiscence of their mother, the overall space in this project is designed as manifestation of treasured family memories with its structure alluding to stream of consciousness and linked by imaginative inventions
“Having received higher education, Mother was a very advanced woman in her time during the Japanese occupation period in Taiwan. I remember when I was little, I thought she was capable of anything as I watched her make drawings at the table.” Like pieces of a puzzle, memories shared by the sisters converged to form an image of their mother. “When we came home from school, we opened the front door and the first to greet us was a long antechamber. After taking off our shoes, we followed the wafting scent of delicious food to the kitchen where Mother busily walked in and out. She’d urge us to finish our homework in the room with a patio, and outside the window of that room was a garden she tenderly built.” At times vivid, at times hazy, images of the old house surfaced through these descriptions like old yellow photographs.Because the overall spatial structure in this project is designed to manifest memory from different times, the result is a floor plan unlike that of any other residence. Outside the front door is a looming inner garden. Once entering the house, a long, stretching corridor acts as a barrier between the outside and inside worlds while encouraging one to unwind. The antechamber does not lead to a grand living room, but rather a common area outside four bedrooms for the sisters to chat or enjoy a moment of tranquility in the middle of a quiet night.

Walking up the stairs, one would be welcomed by a space resonating familiarity: an open kitchen and a living room with a porch. On the other hand, whether lying or sitting down, as one looks up to the sloping wood ceiling childhood memories and infinite imagination would be sure to float through the mind. On the plain concrete walls are works painstakingly made by their mother over the years.
As the design progressed, their memories of home were summoned from the past, unfolding before their eyes as if childhood was only yesterday.
